Sabino Canyon, a 12,000‑acre natural area at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains in southern Arizona, has restricted private vehicle access since 1978. Visitors explore the canyon solely through emission‑free, narrated “Crawlers” accommodating up to 62 passengers per shuttle.

Business Challenge

• Diesel-powered shuttles were noisy, polluting, and misaligned with preservation goals.
• On-site impulse ticketing had to be improved—complementing the existing online reservation system.
• Extreme climate (up to 115 °F) and remote connectivity posed installation and operation challenges.

Solutions Delivered

Advanced Kiosks was selected through a competitive RFP to install four robust kiosks:

• Outdoor Transit kiosks (2) – Freestanding, 14‑gauge stainless steel, full climate control, 1,100‑nit sunlight-readable displays.
• Thru‑Wall kiosks (2) – Secure wall‑mounted units with indoor maintenance access, ideal for unattended operations in extreme heat.
• All units integrated over cellular via Zamok Kiosk Management Software for remote monitoring and uptime alerts.

Outcome

• User adoption: Over 330,000 ticket transactions processed.
• Revenue impact: Generated more than $3.8 million in on-site sales.
• Payment transition: Credit/debit usage soared from 0 % to 97 %, drastically reducing cash handling.
• Operational resilience: Remote diagnostics enabled rapid response, even in locations with spotty DSL.
