At Advanced Kiosks, our development processes and engineering depth provide a valuable service to our customers and the end users of our ADA compliant kiosk models. When it comes to accessibility and security, we are at the top of our game delivering self service solutions to meet the needs of all individuals in this ever changing landscape of interactive technology.

The Importance of ADA Compliance

According to the U.S. Census Bureau there are more than 51 million individuals with disabilities in the United States. With such a huge number of disabled individuals, it is very important that self service solutions, such as interactive kiosks, be designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications.

Advanced Kiosks is a leading self service provider for government agencies and we have extensive expertise in engineering ADA compliant kiosk models.  Every computer kiosk model that we build, comes standard with the features and peripherals for ADA Compliance and kiosk software options to further accommodate users both with and without special needs.

ADA Compliant Kiosk = Customer Service Inclusion

Although most people think ADA was created to assist individuals in wheelchairs, there are other types of disabilities that also benefit from these guidelines such as individuals with vision or hearing impairment.

Our goal is to provide products that accommodate the largest possible audience and help businesses and organizations meet the needs of ALL customers in any way that we can.

What Are the ADA Specifications for Interactive Kiosks?

Within the ADA Compliance Guidelines, there are several sections that are applicable to interactive kiosks. We have outlined those key areas here with diagrams to specify the dimensional requirements.

Position

An “element” such as an interactive kiosk must be placed in a way to allow unobstructed wheelchair access both forward and parallel as shown in this diagram.

The regulation reads: Unless otherwise specified, clear floor or ground space shall be positioned for either forward or parallel approach to an element.

Limits of Protruding Objects

A wall mounted interactive kiosk must fall within the required depth limitations as specified so as not to impede the path of the user. This guideline is designed to aid individuals using a cane or are vision impaired.

The regulation reads: Objects with leading edges more than 27 inches (685 mm) and not more than 80 inches (2030 mm) above the finish floor or ground shall protrude 4 inches (100 mm) maximum horizontally into the circulation path.

Unobstructed Forward Reach

This diagram demonstrates the required height maximum and minimum measurements for unobstructed user forward access from a wheelchair.

The regulation reads: Where a forward reach is unobstructed, the high forward reach shall be 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum and the low forward reach shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground.

Obstructed High Forward Reach

When the interactive kiosk provides the user with something that could be considered an obstruction such as a desk, table or shelf, the Obstructed High Reach guideline applies as shown.

The regulation reads: Where a high forward reach is over an obstruction, the clear floor space shall extend beneath the element for a distance not less than the required reach depth over the obstruction. The high forward reach shall be 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum where the reach depth is 20 inches (510 mm) maximum. Where the reach depth exceeds 20 inches (510 mm), the high forward reach shall be 44 inches (1120 mm) maximum and the reach depth shall be 25 inches (635 mm) maximum.

Unobstructed Side Reach

For instances where a wheelchair user approaches an element such as an interactive kiosk from the side and there are no obstructions, there are reach minimum and maximum measurements that must be adhered to.

The regulation reads: Where a clear floor or ground space allows a parallel approach to an element and the side reach is unobstructed, the high side reach shall be 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum and the low side reach shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground.

Obstructed Side Reach

For instances where a wheelchair user approaches an element such as an interactive kiosk from the side and an obstruction exists, the reach minimum and maximum measurements are shown in this diagram.

The regulation reads: Where a clear floor or ground space allows a parallel approach to an element and the high side reach is over an obstruction, the height of the obstruction shall be 34 inches (865 mm) maximum and the depth of the obstruction shall be 24 inches (610 mm) maximum. The high side reach shall be 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum for a reach depth of 10 inches (255 mm) maximum. Where the reach depth exceeds 10 inches (255 mm), the high side reach shall be 46 inches (1170 mm) maximum for a reach depth of 24 inches (610 mm) maximum.

ADA Friendly Software

Going above and beyond.

There are a number of specific features, peripherals and kiosk software tools that Advanced Kiosks provides to cater to the special needs audience above an beyond what is required. For example, the VoIP options can be helpful for vision impaired users or interactive kiosks can be outfitted with audio controls that assist the hearing impaired.

In addition to the kiosk hardware considerations for disabled users, our kiosk software is also developed with the ADA guidelines in mind, making our self service products the most user friendly for ALL audiences.
