Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority
  • Industry: Transportation / Transit
  • Product: Transit Outdoor Kiosks
  • Deployment: 4 kiosks
  • Location: South Station Commuter Rail, Boston

Background

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) wanted information kiosks to give travelers real-time updates, news, and local attraction information in Boston. Each kiosk was designed for unsupervised placement in public areas, providing self-service information without staff on hand.

Business Challenge

  • Travelers needed real-time updates and local attraction information in a busy transit hub
  • The kiosks had to operate unsupervised in a public, high-traffic area
  • Tourists needed a way to take information with them, not just view it on screen
  • The units had to be durable enough for a transit environment

Solutions Delivered

Advanced Kiosks deployed four Transit Outdoor Kiosks at South Station Commuter Rail, built with full-size printers so travelers could print information at no cost.

The kiosks provide:

  • Real-time updates, news, and local attraction information for Boston travelers
  • A self-service printer for local maps and attraction details, free to the user
  • The ability to download information to a personal device
  • Pre-installed kiosk software for reliable unsupervised operation

Outcome

The kiosks give travelers passing through South Station a self-service way to get Boston maps, attraction details, and real-time information, and to print it or take it with them at no cost. Built for unsupervised operation, they deliver tourist information around the clock without staffing.

For the MBTA, the kiosks add a practical convenience for Boston’s many transit travelers and tourists, a durable, self-contained information point in one of the city’s busiest hubs.
